Hi Guys! Steve here with a new YLE activity. This week I prepared an ESL worksheet and game based on the Fry Sight Words. We’ll prepare all 1,000 Fry Sight Words in this series, but today, we’ll introduce you to the first 110.

In our English Academies in Korea, we teach phonics and sight words at the exact same time. A lot of phonics resources forget to focus on really simple sight words like ‘he’, ‘her’, or ‘the’. And if you only follow those books, then your ESL students will really hit a lot of road blocks when they leave their Phonics classes and enter either reading or course book classes.

So, to get ahead of those road bumps, I’ve made this series of Sigh Word activities for my students. Every week, we take one worksheet and spend the first 5-10 minutes of class listening, repeating, and playing the dice game.

I’ve really found that this has a huge effect on the kids when they level up into our beginner courses, so I really can’t encourage you enough to give this a try.

Here’s how I typically run through it…

  1. Read the first 5 words in class together
  2. Specifically, call on one student, allow them to try to read it, correct their pronunciation, then listen and repeat 3 times with the entire class.
  3. Continue like this until you’ve done the first five.
  4. Then, as a class, play the dice game together. With the teacher as a leader, roll the dice, and select a student to read the corresponding sight word.
  5. After this, separate the children into pairs to play the game once on their on with only ONE DICE and only use the first five sightwords.
  6. Next, teach sight words 6-10 in the same manner… call on a student, let them attempt to read it, correct their pronunciation, and listen and repeat three times.
  7. After that, give the children TWO DICE, separate into pairs, and let them play the game for 1-2 minutes. Award them a point for each word that they’ve read. Rotate partners and do this for as long as you want.

Give this a try in your class and let me know how it goes! If you have any questions or advice, make sure to leave it below!
